Should a Small Business Use Social Networking to Gain Customers?
60
The immense popularity of social networking has made the Web 2.0 era a huge success. In addition to blogs and video sharing sites, platforms like Facebook, MySpace and Twitter have created thriving communities that see people from all over the world communicating and interacting.
- Video Email
Video email is perfect for getting your personality to your readers heart.
The fact that millions of consumers are spending their time in these networks has marketing analysts and experts singing the praises of the social web. Tried and tested, social networking is now regarded as a powerful engagement tool that helps small businesses attract new customers, and maintain strong relationships with the clients they already have. Because both types of consumers are locked into this environment, targeting them both only makes sense. Here’s why:
Two-Way Communications
Building relationships is an integral part of marketing a business. Communication is the tool used to build them. Blog posts, status updates, and video feeds all provide small businesses with a way to directly communicate and share content with existing customers and prospects. On the web, content isn’t limited to text, so you can get very creative with engaging visual elements that help your communications make more of an impact. The direct communication aspect of social networking opens the door to interactive, two-way conversations, making it possible to fully connect with your target audience on an equal playing field.
Easy Collaboration
Several tools are emerging to streamline the process, but social networking is a powerful collaboration tool its own right. In the new era of social marketing, it is the consumer who makes, shapes, or breaks a brand, not the company. For this reason, online marketers are devising strategies that include gathering evangelists through communication and collaboration. The latter is not limited to in-house teams as tools like Twitter and YouTube allow communities to collaborate and engage to the point where they become the ambassadors for your small business. Why does social collaboration make such a powerful marketing tool? Because consumers are far more likely to trust the word of their peers instead of the brands their peers endorse.
You Can Afford It
You can spend a lot of money investing in digital advertising and other marketing solutions. For many small businesses, a tight budget puts options such as these out of reach. That’s one of the benefits of social networking. You can create a credible presence for your business on Twitter, LinkedIn, or Facebook without needing a big corporate budget to keep the momentum rolling. However, it is important to know that cementing yourself in this world does take time and effort. The key is communication, consistency, and providing your audience with an easy way to interact. If you devote the time and put in the effort, social networking can take your business on a very enjoyable ride.
The Time is Now
So you’re late to the party and all your competitors are mingling on the networks don’t let that stop you. The legions of social networking users will not stop indulging in this phenomenon any time soon. Now is the perfect time to dive in and propel your small business to the next level.

Depends on niche!
For exmaple, a little business was established on the slop near here(Estonia) where you can "Snow Tube" and snowboard etc. They are renting out the equipments and selling slop tickets.. and social media(facebook) have helped them quite a bit !

I think it depends on what your business is. The video email is a great idea for everyone, but facebook and what not, could just be too time consuming and end up wasting too much time.
