Subject lines are so crucial to an email campaign that they can either make or break your marketing venture. It is the first thing the recipient will notice when scrolling through their inbox, the moment they will either decide to open or ignore it. The subject line must be compelling to the point where it prompts the subscriber to want to know more or your message may not get read and find itself in the recipient’s trash folder. If you have yet to realize the importance of subject lines, here are four ways they can dramatically improve the performance of your email campaign.

1. Opens the Gate to Communication

As an email marketer, the subject line is the first line of communication between you and your audience.  It what entices the subscriber and encourages the curiosity that leads them to read your message.  When the subject line is relevant to your campaign, it can be a great way to automatically boost open rates and make sure the message of your marketing message is felt.

2. Gets You Through the Spam Filters

A well designed subject line is one of the essential keys to getting your email through the recipient’s spam filter.  These filters are enabled on the accounts of most email users, so if your subject lines have been optimized and do not include spam triggering phrases such as “free”, “buy now”, or “special offer”, you have a much greater chance of making it through.  This is a simple practice that can result in immeasurable benefits for your email campaign.

3. Immediate Personalization

A good subject line can help you establish a personal connection with the reader that leads to long term loyalty.  Many successful email campaign managers have learned that composing friendlier, less impersonal subject lines is an effective way to improve open rates.  By relating to them on a more personal level, the reader will come to trust you over time and start to consider you a knowledgeable expert.  With a well crafted subject line, you can develop an immediate connection with the reader and increase the probability of them opening and reading your mail.

4. Drives Your Message Home

When properly composed, a subject line can let the subscriber know what to expect before they even open the message.  Its sums up the contents of an email campaign and includes the most important details in just a few short words.  Some subscribers may not have the time to read your message right away.  With a catchy subject line that is clear and concise, you can better assure that your email is not deleted and the message hits home when the recipient gets around to it.

The importance of a quality subject line cannot be understated.  All it takes is a few words to make your email campaign a success, or a complete bust.  When looking at it from this perspective, it becomes clear to see that it pays to have a sound strategy for your subject lines.  Remember, this is not a one time deal where you can just set it and forget it.  Monitor the performance of your open rates and conversions, and adjust your subject lines accordingly throughout your campaign.
